Just Question

Why was it the case that for the first time in human history - that we needed a vaccine to 'get through' the 'pandemic' - when previously humanity has always existed with ebbing and flowing pandemics 24/7/365 - and we have always 'got through' - without being told that, or indeed needing a vaccine?
