First of all, let us look at the person who took his own life or tried to do so.

This post will not go into any theological arguments about what happens to his soul or spirit.

If he died, that's it. The end. He no longer has to bear the pain that caused him to kill himself. Don't get 🦋 wrong. 🦋 do not say that suicide is a good solution for pain.

👫👬 People who commit suicide do not want to die. They have pain or stress that they cannot handle. Suicide is their way of ending their suffering.

Death do not end problems but cause more problems that we will look at later.

Their death could have been prevented if what was causing the pain or stress was dealt with.

Perhaps the cause of the pain or stress cannot be removed. But if what was felt could be reduced, the person may have been able to bear what is still felt and would have gone on with life.

👬👫 who talk of suicide or show signs of contemplating suicide are telling us that they need help. But what do a lot of us do?

We may not recognise their call for help or we choose to ignore it. Perhaps it make us feel uncomfortable or we do not know how to handle it.

Learn to recognise the signs and if you do not know what to do, talk to others and seek help.

Let us go back to the person contemplating suicide. There is stigma surrounding suicide and you may be afraid to talk about it. Perhaps you have tried talking to those around you but have not obtained any help.

The above has partially explained why they did not help you. Besides the people around you, reach out to others. There are suicide prevention organisations such as the Befrienders or national organisation of your country and telephone hotlines you can call. You can talk to a doctor and he can refer you to a psychologist if necessary.

Remember that suicide is IRREVERSIBLE.

Once you have died, you cannot change your mind and choose to live.

Think also of what will happen if your attempt at suicide did not succeed.

There are people who have gone blind or suffer from permanent health damage from drug overdose or poison consumed.

You may survive an accident or a fall from heights but end up totally and permanently disabled.

Think of the pain and suffering you will have to endure should you survive the attempted suicide. Will it not be worse than what you are now facing?

Even if you do die, did you think of THOSE WHO YOU LEAVE BEHIND.

What would they feel?  What problems will they face?

Those who have lost loved ones to suicide are more likely to commit suicide than the general population.

They have to endure much stress and pain.

They may have to bear life long regret that they were not able to help you.

They may blame themselves for life.

Children may also be affected for life. Some may have a sense of abandonment or some may feel responsible (regardless of whether they are responsible or not) for your suicide eg children blaming themselves for the stress or arguments between their parents.

It has already been pointed out that those who have lost ones to suicide are at risk of  committing suicide.

Some of the stronger survivors take it upon themselves to spread suicide awareness and try to prevent others from committing suicide.

Having gone through the above is why I want to reach out to those who are suffering.

Below are some facts copied from a WHO or World Health Organisation regarding suicide

Key facts

  • More than 700 000 people die due to suicide every year.
  • For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide. A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general population.
  • Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-19 year-olds.
  • 77% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Ingestion of pesticide, hanging and firearms are among the most common methods of suicide globally.

Every year 703 000 people take their own life and there are many more people who attempt suicide. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families,

2 of the above facts that I 🦋 want to highlight are:

For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide.

And

A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general
🦋 has engaged in self harm activities that could have ended in death

🦋's friend Eric would also probably have committed suicide if 🦋 had not helped him.

The main aim of 🦋 BBS by the name of Memories Of The Way We Were (Memore) is to promote better Human Relationships and to prevent suicides.

Please do not struggle alone if you fall into any of the following categories:

1) You are contemplating suicide.

2) You have attempted suicide before (you are a  high risk as mentioned above)

3) You know of anyone who may be contemplating suicide or show signs of doing so

4) You already have lost someone to suicide
