The word "knew" Eve is used as an euphemism for had sex with.

Bear in mind, that before seeing Eve for the first time, Adam had never seen a human being before.
Eve was more like Adam than all the animals that God had brought to Adam.
Yet there were obvious differences between Adam and Eve because they were both naked.
