Why people contemplate suicide?
Feb 1, 2022 7:46 PM
Do you have friends or relatives who have committed suicide?
People who take their own life or is thinking of doing so do not really want to die.
They are unable or do not know how to handle pain. They see suicide as a means to end their suffering.
If we can help them to deal with or reduce their pain, we can save their lives.
Do not ignore those who talk about taking their own life. They are crying out for help.
If you do not know how to help him, get him to talk to someone else. There are suicide prevention organisations like The Befrienders with 24 hours telephone lines
Awareness of what makes people contemplate suicide enables us to reach out to them.
In rare cases, a person may want to commit suicide to punish or get revenge by inflicting guilt on another. That person is so full of hurt, anger and bitterness that he cannot think clearly. He wants to do something irreversible so that the person being punished cannot do anything to reverse the suicide and will have to permanently suffer guilt, remorse or fear (if he believes in ghosts that can come to take revenge).
The purpose of such motivation will fail where the anger and bitterness is mutual and not one sided. The person being punished welcomes the suicide. Demons who deceived the person into committing suicide will get to gloat over him eg. You did what he wants or you saved him from getting into trouble for murdering you. Ha.Ha.Ha.
While we are on the thread of demons, there are cases of demonic deception. There are also cases of mass suicide as in cults.
A common reason for contemplating suicide is to seek a solution or way out
Examples of this include : - a person with so much debt that it is impossible to pay - enable beneficiary of insurance policy to make claim. A needed warning here is that insurance policies often include exclusion clauses so that claims cannot be made for suicide or claims are invalid if suicide is within 3 years of inception or reinstatement - a person who is cornered and does not want to be caught
The most common reason for suicide is as an end of pain. Substance abuse and alcohol can only temporarily hide pain. Once the effect of these wear out,the pain return. For the person contemplating suicide, death is a permanent end of having to face pain. What he fails to see is the pain and difficulties he cause to those left behind.
We can help those who are contemplating suicide by helping them to deal with pain rather than seeking an end of enduring pain.
Perhaps we are part of his pain and it is within our ability to reduce his pain by changing what we do.
I have not committed suicide. Obviously. Otherwise I would not be here writing to you. But I have engaged in risky behaviour that could have ended in death.
What I did not realize at that time is what if the result of my risky behaviour is not death but becoming permanently incapacitated such loosing 2 legs or 2 arms? Instead of getting an end to pain, life would have become worse. I thank God that my memory loss following an accident was not total or permanent. It has improved substantially.
