WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, observed on July 30 every year, is a holiday set aside for the sensitization of global citizens to the human trafficking pandemic. Human Trafficking involves recruiting, transporting, and possession of human individuals through coercion or other fraudulent means to exploit them for profit. Anyone can be a victim of this heinous act regardless of age or background, and human trafficking is present all over the world. HISTORY OF WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS Human trafficking is a global pandemic that stemmed from the era of slavery and is still very much prevalent today. It can be defined simply as the unlawful act of transporting or coercing people to benefit from their work or service, which is typically in the form of forced labor or sexual exploitation. The act is a crime against the person because it violates the victim’s rights of movement through coercion as well as the fact that the victim is being commercially exploited. Human trafficking particularly targets women and children, and may not always involve the movement of the person from one place to another. And though labor trafficking and sex trafficking are usually treated separately in the general trafficking discourse, one thing that victims of both forms of trafficking have in common is that their trafficking began with a migration to a seemingly better environment. The United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others was adopted in 1949 and came into effect in 1951. The convention was a legal turning point in human trafficking as it was the primary legally binding instrument on the subject. As of today, only 66 countries have ratified the convention. The major reason for the low ratification rate is the hesitation of several countries to criminalize prostitution as stipulated by the Convention. Following the enforcement of the Convention, the international community adopted several (legally non-binding) instruments which directed the focus of human trafficking to (the trafficking of) women. One such instrument is The Beijing Platform for Action adopted by the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, which calls for the effective suppression of the trafficking of women and girls in the sex trade. HOW TO OBSERVE WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS - Read up on the history of trafficking. You can and should do some reading up on the history of trafficking. Research how international organizations have handled it so far. - Donate to shelters for trafficking victimsDonate clothes and other goods to shelters for victims of human trafficking, as this would go a long way. Any amount helps and it’s for a worthwhile cause. - Offer jobs to survivors of trafficking If you are privileged to do so, kindly give jobs to survivors of human trafficking, to help them get back on their feet. It takes a lot of strength and resilience to recover from something like human trafficking. Any help along the way is appreciated by survivors. 5 FACTS ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING - Human trafficking is a global phenomenon. Human trafficking is not specific to a few regions, but is rather a global act against humanity, with some countries having particularly high rates of trafficking. - Most victims are women and girls. Most victims of human trafficking are women and girls who are exploited for sex work. - It’s a billion-dollar industry. Human trafficking is an “industry” that reportedly rakes in hundreds of billions of dollars globally each year. - Migrants are susceptible to trafficking. Migrants who come into a country newly are usually susceptible to trafficking, particularly if it is illegal migration. - Certain major corporations employ child labor. A handful of major global companies benefit from child labor. Some of these companies include Nestle and Nike, among others. NATIONAL CHEESECAKE DAY IN THE UNITED STATES

National Cheesecake Day is the creamiest and yummiest holiday held on July 30 where America samples and indulges in some of the most delicious cheesecakes ever! Separately, cheese and cake are beloved all over the world. But taken together, they attract a veritable cult following. Cheesecake is thought to have originated in ancient Greece, as evidenced by its earliest mention in Greek physician, Aegimus’, a book on the art of making cheesecakes. Since then, cheesecake has been passed down through the generations and entered into the fabric of numerous cultures. HISTORY OF NATIONAL CHEESECAKE DAY Weirdly enough, the origins of the Cheesecakes are not known to us but it can be traced as early as back to ancient Greece. The recipe used back then only consisted of the most basic ingredients such as cheese, flour, and honey. Interestingly, cheesecake was fed to the greek athletes during the Olympics held back in 776 B.C. It was not until when the Romans conquered ancient Greece that eggs and proper baking methods were introduced.  As time went by, the recipe was modified several times to get that perfect ratio of smooth to creamy consistency, and this led us to the American cheesecake that we all know and love! In 1872, New York dairyman William Lawrence unintentionally came up with cream cheese while he was trying to replicate a French cheese called the Neufchatel. Talk about luck, right! Cream cheese became so popular and the demand for it became so high that it was packaged and distributed to all the local stores in the area. Time went by, and an immigrant named Arnold Reuben from Germany, who lived in New York, was once served cheese pie at an event he attended. He was so fascinated and intrigued by the dessert, that he decided to experiment with the recipe until he came up with what we know today as the New York Cheesecake.  The popularity of the New York Cheesecake increased so much that different cities came up with their own versions, for example, the Chicago cheesecake, the Pennsylvanian cheesecake, etc. It became such an important part of American culture, that in 1985, it was decided that on July 30 every year National Cheesecake Day would be celebrated. Enthronement in Morocco on July 30

We are celebrating the Enthronement in Morocco on July 30. It is an annual celebration to mark the enthronement of the king of Morocco. The day is also known as ‘Throne Day.’ King Mohammed VI took the throne in 1999 after the death of his father, King Mohammed VI. The day changes based on the king and his enthronement date. The celebration started back in 1933 with the accession of Mohammed V of Morocco. It continues to this day. On this day, there will be cultural events and festivals throughout the nation. The king will address the nation. The day secures and cements the bond between the Moroccan people and their king and his royal family. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FRIENDSHIP

We live in a tough world. Between miscommunications, mistreatment, lack of trust, discrimination, and cultural discord, prioritizing peace seemingly has less of a presence in the global society. There really is no reason for the world not to exist in some harmonious form. We have the United Nations to thank for helping to remind us all that there is some good in this world. We were first introduced to International Day of Friendship in 2011; this special day goes beyond connecting people and builds bridges among cultures, countries, and even ideologies. Friendship and connections are synonymous with bonding, and building those common bonds goes beyond sharing a trait, characteristic, or favorite pastime with another person or group, but also includes promoting a global commitment and understanding of diversity and inclusion. Even in our differences, we can find common ground. Physical appearances, differences of opinions, political views, tastes, music, and more are not reasons to separate people. Relationships are bigger than that, and the UN works to promote kindness and togetherness every July. Celebrating friendships through things as simple as a brief note, a coffee hang out, going to a concert, or taking a trip to the mall are all ways to find commonalities. Again, we have more in common than we all realize. And any idea that minimizes the amount of hatred and disdain spread throughout the world is the kind we want to be shared. We’d like to think that something we all have in common. Before the U.N. made its designation, the very first World Friendship Day was proposed in 1958 by the World Friendship Crusade, which is an international civil organization that campaigns to foster peaceful culture through friendship.
