Version 4.0.0 - The Great Reset (Announcement!)

Hello BBSers, we have a huge announcement for you today regarding some new and upcoming changes and the BBS Network direction.

Throughout its inception, BBS Network has taken a multitude of steps to encourage high quality, genuinely engaging content. To continue towards this goal, BBS Network will be undergoing The Great Reset.

The Great Reset

The Great Reset is a planned series of phased updates to rework the incentivization system of BBS Network to naturally foster a healthy ecosystem. These changes will take place over five phases, starting with Phase One launching alongside this announcement.

Phase One

Phase One is being launched alongside this announcement, and brings a few notable changes

  • Whitelist Request button removed
  • Whitelist Criteria changed
  • Engagement Mining criteria updated
  • Clicking a post’s link from the main feed will now bring you to the post first
  • Whitelisted members reset on all boards in 7 days

Whitelist Criteria Update, Reset, & Button Removal

Until now, users requested whitelist approval by reaching a $20 cashable balance and submitting a request via the button on the board. So long as the requester earned this amount legitimately and within community guidelines then the request was likely approved.

This method placed a large emphasis on a monetary focus to reach the set cashable balance, and not enough emphasis on the quality of content that is being generated. While posts have undeniably raised in quality since the genesis of BBS Network, this whitelisting method still incentivizes taking the path of least resistance to that cashable goal, instead of incentivizing creating high quality and genuinely engaging content.

Whitelisting is now an invite-only process per board. Board owners may whitelist the best contributors to incentivize and reward their activity, but board members are by no means guaranteed whitelisting for participation. In future phases, the revenue and cashable-related sections of each BBS will not be visible to non-whitelisted members. (Phase 3)

To adapt to this change all Engagement Mining approved boards will have their whitelist reset seven (7) days from this announcement. Only high quality contributors to the board’s goal may be invited to the whitelist. Other boards approved or seeking approval for Engagement Mining are required to make sure only high quality contributors are approved for the whitelist.

During this 7 day period before the reset, no new whitelist requests will be accepted or processed.

Engagement Mining Requirements

  • BBS must focus around a popular topic. - A good measurement for a topic’s popularity would be the engagement it generates in similar platforms
  • On-topic Posts (at least 10 posts by unique users) - Meta-posts (posts about the board or community rather than its topic) are not counted
  • BBS generates high-quality discussion on topic - A good comparison would be top subreddits on similar topics
  • BBS whitelists high-quality contributing members  - Top contributors (whitelisted users) measured according to their reputation, quality of their posts and comments.
  • BBS monitors and mitigates any fraudulent activity

Post Links from Main Feed

Previously when clicking a link from the main post list of a board it would bring you immediately to the URL. Now, clicking the link from the main list will navigate to the post itself first to ensure impressions can register for posts for advertisers.

It’s safe to assume that a large amount of quality content is and will be created outside the BBS Network, and it’s important that boards and their members are also rewarded for aggregating quality content outside of BBS and generating further engagement around it.

Phase Two and Beyond

Phase Two will be launched at a later date, and will consist of changes to the language of BBS as well as some adjustments to the revenue share.

  • BBS Owner share adjustments
  • Impression balancing
  • Terminology redesign

This phase will focus on tuning mechanical incentivization and UI design to foster both healthy communities, and proper incentivization for high quality publishers. This phase includes several terminology changes for cashable balance, whitelisting, post purchasing, etc in preparation for later  phases. With this, “Community Currency” will be changed to “Reputation” and later mechanically reworked in Phase 4.

Phase Three

As mentioned above, Phase 3 will consist of separating the UX from whitelisted and non-whitelisted users.

Whitelisted members of a board will be able to see its revenue stats, advertisement activity, etc. Non-whitelisted members will only see the community currency (rebranded in Phase Four) and all revenue activity will be hidden unless the member is invited to the whitelist.

This change along with the whitelisting update will ensure that BBS Network attracts users who want to genuinely engage and interact with the board topic, and the financial reward shifts to a bonus for the highest contributing members of each board - instead of the being the main focus for users.

Phase Four & Five

Phase Four will include the mechanical rework of Community Currency into ‘Reputation’.This will also utilize changes from Phase Two to simplify the purchase system, and create a simpler to understand curation mechanism. Members who curate high quality posts will gather higher reputation. Having a high amount of reputation does not guarantee an invite to the whitelist, but it will increase standing in the BBS’s leaderboard which will make the user stand out further against the crowd for consideration.

Phase Five will focus on including commentators of posts into the revenue sharing model and reputation system.

More details of each of these phases will be released over time.

Overview

As this is a big change to BBS Network, we wanted to lay out the plan moving forward along with the first phase.

For BBS Network to thrive, quality content needs to be able to thrive on BBS Network. These changes are designed to push the natural focus of members to creating high quality and genuinely engaging content in order to build reputation and establish themselves on a BBS.

We’re eager to hear feedback from everyone, and questions are welcome!
