The Great Wall (2016)
(Action/Fantas)

I hadn't planned on watching this film after reading negative reviews, but I changed my mind when I saw a cheap 3D Blu-ray copy online.
Contrary to my expectations of a historical epic like 'The Last Samurai,' the film turned out to be an action-packed flick similar to 'Independence Day,' though the promotional material didn't convey this.

Overall, I found it to be an average action film with impressive visuals, including unique-looking demons with eyes on their shoulders.

However, it was still formulaic and lacked character development. The pacing was uneven, with exciting battle scenes followed by slow moments. The acting was unremarkable, and I felt indifferent towards the high death toll.

My friend likened the ending to 'Sharknado,' which I think is an accurate description of the film's b-grade feel. The rule about killing the queen to defeat the demons was also unoriginal, reminiscent of both 'Starship Troopers' and 'Independence Day.'

Either on Independence Day or during Marvel's Avengers, the repetitiveness of the plot has become tedious.
Matt Damon's character, though well-played, is excessively perfect, never missing a shot with his bow and even tossing a shield like Captain America. His lack of weaknesses made him dull.

The film boasted a talented cast, but they were underutilized. One scene that stood out to me was when William Dafoe's character was kidnapped in the desert and his captors accidentally dropped a ceramic grenade into an open fire pit.

leading to Dafoe's priceless expression and muffled yells as his mouth was tied shut, which I found entertaining, although I'm unsure if that was the intended effect.

Ultimately, the film has a B-movie feel despite its big-screen budget. It's packed with action, absurd scenarios, constant CGI, and predictable plot points. Despite the spectacular-looking fights, that's all it offers.
The movie wasn't what I anticipated, and I don't think it was advertised effectively. While it may appeal to some, I don't feel compelled to watch it again.
