Hello READBBS community,Well after a long time a new post is getting posted here recently i read a book called Resisting Happiness by Mathew kelly a friend of mine had a hard cover book so he lended me for a month to read and return back..i read 5-6 pages at every night and formed the habit of reading every morning.. i try to read as long as i can mostly 20-30 mins every morning and sometimes at night before going to sleep.. Now about the book and my review..i thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as well i needed something like this to read and i would recommend all to read this one..Here are some of my favourite quotes from the book..“Wherever you find excellence, you find continuous learning. "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson

Summary - The villagers of a small town gather together in the square on June 27, a beautiful day, for the town lottery. In other towns, the lottery takes longer, but there are only 300 people in this village, so the lottery takes only two hours. Village children, who have just finished school for the summer, run around collecting stones. They put the stones in their pockets and make a pile in the square. Men gather next, followed by the women. Parents call their children over, and families stand together. Mr. Summers runs the lottery because he has a lot of time to do things for the village. He arrives in the square with the black box, followed by Mr. Graves, the postmaster. This black box isn’t the original box used for the lottery because the original was lost many years ago, even before the town elder, Old Man Warner, was born. Mr. Summers always suggests that they make a new box because the current one is shabby, but no one wants to fool around with tradition. Mr. Summers did, however, convince the villagers to replace the traditional wood chips with slips of paper. Mr. Summers mixes up the slips of paper in the box. He and Mr. Graves made the papers the night before and then locked up the box at Mr. Summers’s coal company. Before the lottery can begin, they make a list of all the families and households in the village. Mr. Summers is sworn in. Some people remember that in the past there used to be a song and salute, but these have been lost. Tessie Hutchinson joins the crowd, flustered because she had forgotten that today was the day of the lottery. She joins her husband and children at the front of the crowd, and people joke about her late arrival. Mr. Summers asks whether anyone is absent, and the crowd responds that Dunbar isn’t there. Mr. Summers asks who will draw for Dunbar, and Mrs. Dunbar says she will because she doesn’t have a son who’s old enough to do it for her. Mr. Summers asks whether the Watson boy will draw, and he answers that he will. Mr. Summers then asks to make sure that Old Man Warner is there too. Mr. Summers reminds everyone about the lottery’s rules: he’ll read names, and the family heads come up and draw a slip of paper. No one should look at the paper until everyone has drawn. He calls all the names, greeting each person as they come up to draw a paper. Mr. Adams tells Old Man Warner that people in the north village might stop the lottery, and Old Man Warner ridicules young people. He says that giving up the lottery could lead to a return to living in caves. Mrs. Adams says the lottery has already been given up in other villages, and Old Man Warner says that’s “nothing but trouble.” Mr. Summers finishes calling names, and everyone opens his or her papers. Word quickly gets around that Bill Hutchinson has “got it.” Tessie argues that it wasn’t fair because Bill didn’t have enough time to select a paper. Mr. Summers asks whether there are any other households in the Hutchinson family, and Bill says no, because his married daughter draws with her husband’s family. Mr. Summers asks how many kids Bill has, and he answers that he has three. Tessie protests again that the lottery wasn’t fair. Mr. Graves dumps the papers out of the box onto the ground and then puts five papers in for the Hutchinsons. As Mr. Summers calls their names, each member of the family comes up and draws a paper. When they open their slips, they find that Tessie has drawn the paper with the black dot on it. Mr. Summers instructs everyone to hurry up. The villagers grab stones and run toward Tessie, who stands in a clearing in the middle of the crowd. Tessie says it’s not fair and is hit in the head with a stone. Everyone begins throwing stones at her.3y

A HIDDEN PLACE by Simon J. Wood READ

‘Connect the Clues!’ said the library sign. “What’s that about?” I asked a female librarian, middle-aged and plain-looking, with a grey bob of greasy hair. She didn’t look up from her screen, instead pushing a flyer across the desk at me.“Thank you so much,” I said, my sarcasm seemingly falling on deaf ears. Hmm. It sounded quite interesting. There were ten clues to things in the library. You filled in your answers to be entered for a draw to win a £100 book token. When was the last time I had one of those I wondered. Probably at least forty years ago!I read, ‘Clue no. 1. Downstairs, there’s a painting, in a hidden place. If you find it then you’ll gaze upon a famous face.’ I trotted down some stairs labelled ‘To Public Archives’ and walked to an area with racks of newspapers and some stands to read at. Beyond was a corridor lined with shelves full of magazine holders. At the far end lay what looked like an alcove. Ah-ha! Many of the strip lights down here weren’t working and the light was poor. The magazines seemed to grow increasingly old as I headed down the narrow corridor. I read a label. ‘Cycling Monthly Jan-Dec 1928’. No-one about. I was the only one down here. Disappointingly, a green-cushioned chair sat in the alcove, no painting. Behind it was a door with a push-button lock. Well it did say a ‘hidden place’ but surely that was private? I looked around nervously, then moved the chair and tried the door. It was locked. On impulse I punched 1-2-3-4 and bingo! it opened. Someone should change that code! Inside lay an ancient brick stairway with an old iron railing. I pressed a switch and small light bulbs, curving down and out of sight, illuminated the way. In for a penny… Closing the door behind me, I started down a spiral staircase. Down and round and down and round I went. There was wiring along the wall and the little lights continued, although the further down I went, the lower the roof became, until it was scarcely above my head. Finally the staircase opened onto a small dank cave-like space with an earthen floor. In the centre was a plinth with a book chained to it. Light came from a single dim bulb in the ceiling. The covers of the book were vellum, smooth cream calf leather. I opened it and my heart thudded at the image of a hideous demon. Suddenly all the lights went out. In the total darkness I started to feel panic rising. Then I felt fetid breath in my face and the hot touch of a scaly hand on mine Mr. Smith, Mr. Smith! I opened my eyes to find myself in a hospital bed, a pretty young Indian nurse gently shaking my arm. “What happened?” I asked, groggily as the room came into focus. “You fell down some stairs in the library. They thought you might be concussed. We’ll do some tests, it won’t take long,” she said. “Oh, I had a strange dream.” “Yes?” I caught sight of my right hand. Across the back were four faint parallel red streaks. “Oh, nothing…” SOURCE3y

TRAIN OF THOUGHT by Simon J. Wood READ

It was a spring day, and the writer sat on a bench under the station clock. He took a deep breath, revelling in the sensation of rebirth in the warm air. In the distance, far off, below the backdrop of craggy, pine-covered mountains, he could just make out a dot that signified the oncoming train. He was very old, and his thin frame seemed lost within the baggy grey suit he wore. He looked up at the clock, where the thick black minute hand against the white disc had just passed 11.50. Yes, the train would be on time. He opened a battered brown suitcase, took out an ancient notebook and smiled. A gift from his auntie Nellie when he’d got his first job at the Cravenbrook Times. Now it was seventy years later. Where had all those years gone? The old writer gazed at a faded poster for a feature film on the station wall. Hollywood stars alternately grimaced and smiled back at him. But if he had made the effort to stand up and walk over, he could have looked in the small print below the big names and seen his own name as the screenwriter. Well, one of them. “Dan, we can use the script but it’s going to need serious rewriting, we’re pairing you up with Solomon Peebles.” He’d been over that darned script so many times the print was almost worn out in places. He thought it was damned near perfect. Yeah, maybe it could do with a few edits here and there, but ‘serious rewriting’! His hackles had risen. “Hang on, Quent, Sol Peebles was in diapers when I’d written a dozen books and four movie scripts!” “Look, Dan, calm down. We’ll fly you out to LA. Take some chill-out time. Lay on the beach, take a hike in the hills, then sit down with Sol for a week and he’ll run through the changes with you.” The old man ran a hand over his bald head and looked down the line. The train was now visible as a train, no longer a distant speck. He looked around the platform. There were no other passengers. All was quiet and peaceful. He flicked through his notebook. There’d been many other notebooks since, but here were notes from many newspaper assignments – interviews, court reports, and jottings for his novels and stories too. He took out a pencil and sucked on the stub, re-reading his shorthand for a 1954 interview with Ray Bradbury for the thousandth time. “Ray, you just won a gold medal for Fahrenheit 451. Congratulations! Do you remember how you got started writing?” “Well, Dan, my first decision about a career was when I was eleven. I wanted to be a magician and travel the world.” He’d smiled. “Well, you are a magician. With words!” “Well, thank you.” Ray Bradbury laughed. “Anyway, my second decision was at the age of twelve. I got a toy typewriter for Christmas. And decided to become a writer.” “When did you get your first break?” he inquired. Ray Bradbury took off his owl-like glasses and polished them with a green silk handkerchief. “Well, Dan, er, my first acceptance came from Rob Wagner’s Script Magazine, when I was twenty. In the meantime, I’d written three million words!” The line began to hum with the approaching train and the old man slipped the pencil back into the retaining band of the old notebook and put it back into the suitcase. He remembered his Auntie Nellie with fondness. How his brother, Paul, and he had laughed at the way she often pronounced ‘om’ as ‘um,’ so she’d talk about ‘nuclear bums’ and ‘IRA terrorist bums.’ His auntie had brought them both up after his parents were wiped out by a German bomb one ghastly night. All he remembered of his mother was rosy cheeks and dark, liquid eyes that seemed to be filled with unconditional love for him. He didn’t remember his father at all. “Auntie, have any more terrorist bums exploded?” he would ask, trying to keep a straight face. Then they’d all collapse with laughter. Even Auntie Nellie would join in the fun. “I hope not, Daniel. They say there’s a shortage of toilet paper!” The brakes sighed and the long blue engine slowed, and carriage after shiny carriage passed, until the train came to a standstill. No one got off and there was no announcement. The old man got on and a uniformed hand stretched out to help him up the steps. The train sprang into life again and began to move slowly along the platform, picking up speed until the rail began to sing once more. Then it was off down the line, whilst small white clouds in a pristine blue sky watched it go until it was just the tiniest of tiny dots in the far distance again. On the platform stood the old writer’s battered brown suitcase. He was going somewhere where he wouldn’t be needing it anymore. Somewhere where he hoped those rosy cheeks and dark, liquid eyes would be waiting for him.3y

"Swami and Friends" - R.K Narayan

Swami and friends is probably one of favourite series from "R.K Narayan's" Series "Malgudi Days" i loved reading this one as a kid and would recommend anyone looking for a real good read..Certain books define coming of age for an English fiction reader. Sherlock Holmes, Famous Five, Hercule Poirot…the list goes on. Some of us have different lists, but in a readers’ group it would be astonishing that if we have skipped the must-reads, it is a blot in our readership career.Swami is used to a simple life, and just when he had it under control, new things start to happen for him. He has to prepare for exams, cope with his new baby brother, and his new high school certainly hasn't gotten of to a very good start. Life starts to get very overwhelming, and Swami might just have to run away. This is one Indian novel, that isn't just about snake charmers and tigers, and is one of the world's best English novels by an Indian author RK Narayan is probably the most eminent writer of this genre — light fiction — any day, any time read, with a flow that rivals native English writers. Humor and irony are his mainstay, yet it does not devolve into satire because his characters carry with them the whole baggage of their attributes. Swami and Friends is a beautifully crafted series of short stories, connected by the characters. In today’s parlance, this would turn as a novel, and if televised a series with couple of seasons and multiple episodes. Swami and Friends is the second book in the Malgudi Schooldays series. RK Narayan has woven together, all from the depths of his own imagination, the magical village of Malgudi in India. But the best thing is, you don't have to have read the first book to understand this one. Can be read by anyone, anytime and anywhere. Whatever the village is up to, whether it's strikes or cricket matches it will have you in fits of laughter. And if you (like Swami) are one of those people who rush through homework in the morning, then this is definitely one for you! This could just have easily been a normal story, as there are so many tales told from the eyes of young people. But RK Narayan has somehow turned this book into something special, and made it the one of a kind. Reading Swami and Friends made me want to visit Malgudi so badly, and I can tell you with confidence it will do the same for you! PDF Link - 3y

A Mysterious Night with Aliens & an Unknown Life-Saver READ

It was a pleasant midnight. I was sleeping tightly. My sleep was interrupted by a blasting sound. I was alone … My parents were away for a week & I was staying with my Uncle Ron. Since he is deaf, he slept peacefully unaware of the blast. I was totally losing my heart when I realized that there is something mysterious happening in the garden. I didn’t get enough time to wake Uncle up & inform him. I grabbed a torch from my cupboard & rushed towards the place from which I heard the loud sound. I used to be a coward till that time. But at that moment, I gained some courage & that was for the first time in my life! I stood motionlessly at the sight of many UFOs firing at Earth from clear sky. I couldn’t believe my eyes! Is this the end of our planet? I screamed for help. But there was no use of doing that! We lived in a lonely place at the hilltop. So there weren’t anyone nearby to help us. Since Uncle Ron was deaf, he slept inside the house unaware of the destruction happening outside. Suddenly I heard a robotic announcement from one of the UFOs. It was as follows: “Dear inhabitants of Earth, We are the aliens from Planet Zoono who have come here on Earth to take over it. Good-Bye forever to all humans… Well Earth, Time to Take You On!!!! ..." This announcement was ended with a fire ball from the UFOs hitting the Earth… This shook the earth surface… I turned white due to fear! I couldn’t maintain the courage I gained a few minutes before I came to know what was going on… I had no more lifelines other than Uncle Ron! I managed to escape from the firing by aliens & reach Uncle Ron who was lying motionlessly on his bed.  My heart was broken to find him unconscious. He was hurt by the firing! I was no other option other than to prepare myself for death! I cried aloud, “Oh God, I’m coming to you!!!” … Suddenly, I heard someone speaking, “Son, I am always with you!” A bright light fell all over the entire place. It was from the sky! As soon as the light came, all the UFOs disappeared & all the destruction caused by them also vanished! My head felt to be heavy & I fainted seeing the mysterious smile of the unknown life-saver!  When I regained my consciousness, I was on my bed! My Uncle was making coffee for me! He said he had a nice sleep yesterday!!! He isn’t aware of what happened at night! This story happened 5 years ago. Still I have two unsolved questions in my mind regarding that mysterious night;‘Was that dream or a true incident?’ ‘Was the unknown life-saverLord Almighty?’The mystery remains unwrapped!!!3y
