Hello READBBS community many of members asked me what is Engagement Mining and how do we get our board to recieve funds? i will try to explain this in very laymen's term so you can understand it..

Engagement Mining Explained

Engagement Mining is the fuel to the BBS ecosystem. It functions as a subsidy to incentivize & reward BBS owners, content creators, curators and operators in order to bootstrap the network.

50% of the total BBS token supply is expected to be distributed over the span of a few years on a monthly basis to all, genuine BBS’s in the ecosystem.

The engagement rewards are split between the BBS owner (±20%), operator (±10%), and the BBS cashier (±70%).

The BBS Cashier is a pool of BBS tokens from which partnered members and board admins can cash-out their balance for BBS token, giving them access to deep liquidity.

How much does each BBS receive & why?

Each BBS earns based on the amount of daily impressions that BBS receives compared to the total amount of daily impression in the entire BBS network. So for example if you have 1000 daily impressions and the entire BBS network has 10,000, you would receive 10% of the daily BBS token distribution.

Naturally early adopters will earn the most since there will be fewer BBSes to share the rewards with and less adoption to compete with.

Daily Distribution is you can see in the REWARDS TAB on the BBS..

BBS Engagement Mining Pilot Phase - Criteria & Application

BBS Engagement Mining Pilot Phase

Engagement Mining - Post Pilot Phase

While the Engagement Mining pilot phase will be operated by the developing team of BBS, once the full functionality of the Engagement Mining program is released, the decision of approval would fall to the BBS DAO, those who stake their BBS tokens

New boards are currently approved for the program in bi-monthly transitions, if there are any changes to the approved list. Boards that no longer meet requirements will be removed with these transitions as well, unless otherwise required.

Pilot Phase Requirements for Consideration

In order to be considered for the Engagement Mining pilot phase, a board must meet the following criteria:

  • BBS must focus around a popular topic. - A good measurement for a topic’s popularity would be the engagement it generates in similar platforms
  • On-topic Posts (at least 10 posts by unique users) - Meta-posts (posts about the board or community rather than its topic) are not counted
  • BBS consistently generates high-quality on-topic discussion  - A good comparison would be top subreddits on similar topics  - Top posts on the board should generate high-quality discussion
  • BBS only partners high-quality top contributing members  - Top contributors measured according to their reputation, quality of their posts/comments, and the meaningful engagement/discussion they spark or contribute.
  • BBS monitors and mitigates any fraudulent activity, and maintains a healthy activity distribution
  • BBS must reflect well on the BBS Network
  • Approved boards must not maintain Partnership as a primary focus for members.

Focused Board Topic

In order to promote diversity of content and communities, each board will need to have a focused topic in order to be eligible for approval into the Engagement Mining program.

This means that boards seeking approval for Engagement Mining must ensure that their board has a provided topic for members to post about (such as how METABBS is about the BBS Network, VILLA & BANTER are about crypto, THEORY is about Star Wars, etc). The majority of posts on the board must be directly relevant to the focused topic. Topics that are too broad would not be considered a focused topic.

Boards must maintain requirements to remain eligible for the pilot phase of the Engagement Mining program. After the pilot phase, requirements can be set by the BBS DAO.

If there are any questions about these requirements please comment here or message the Community Admins.

Engagement Quality

Applicants to the Engagement Mining program are also reviewed by their quality of engagement and discussion on their board. Posts published on the board should be on topic, and the board should consistently generate posts that produce meaningful engagement and discussion.

Content on the board does not need to be original. Links to articles, discussion of news posts, or sharing information relevant to the board are also considered on-topic posts which contribute to the Engagement Mining qualifications. Taking a look at legacy social media networks such as Reddit, we can see that many of the posts which generate high quality discussion and engagement are links or posts about new or trending information relevant to the topic. Researching similar communities on other platforms is a great way to see what kind of content generates quality and meaningful discussion.

Meaningful engagement and discussion around the board's topic is the most important criteria to be considered for Engagement Mining. Shallow or 'fluff' comments are not considered meaningful discussion/engagement.

Some examples of non-meaningful comments:

  • Shallow expression of opinion: "I like this post, topic, movie, song, food'" etc
  • Irrelevant person discourse such as two members having their own unrelated conversation
  • Meta comments about the community instead of the topic

Not all comments and discussions are expected to be meaningful and engaging, but meaningful discussion should be easily visible within the board's top posts, comments, and high quality contributions.

Partnering on BBS

Each board owner determines their board's revenue distribution, but board's seeking approval for Engagement Mining must ensure to maintain a healthy partnership with the board's top contributors.

Monitoring & Mitigating Fraudulent Activity

Each board owner and their team also has a responsibility to monitor and mitigate fraudulent activity. Boards with unmitigated fraudulent activity (manipulated posts, views, comments, etc) will not be eligible for approval.

Boards should maintain a healthy activity distribution, meaning activity the board generates should not be localized primarily to a small group of users.

Boards must reflect well on BBS Network

Approved boards are supported by the BBS Network Engagement Mining program, and it's important that owners and teams of approved boards continue to promote a positive and healthy image of BBS Network. Approved boards can not force engagement through punitive measures.

Approved boards must not maintain Partnership as a primary focus for members

This means that while approved boards can maintain things such as partnership requirements, it should not be an active constant focus of the board’s discussions or announcements.

Partnership for a board should be maintained for top contributors, and should be a secondary or tertiary focus for the board.

BBS Engagement Mining Application

Once a BBS has reached the requirements, an application may be submitted by posting within the METABBS ā€œEngagement Mining Applicationsā€ channel.

In the application, please include the following:

  • What is the focused topic of the BBS?
  • How does the BBS provide positive value to the Network?
  • What steps are taken to mitigate fraudulent or artificial or manipulated activity?
  • Feel free to include examples of meaningful discussion on your board

After the application is made, send the link to the BBS Community Admin for review.

We’ll review the application and let you know if the board will be added in to the next transition or will continue to be pending.

BBS Network Revenue Distribution

BBS Network gives BBS owners control over their own board’s revenue while allowing them to reward top contributors through partnership with the board. Only a small fee is taken by the platform in order to support the DAO and operator (10%).

With BBS, all ad revenue is distributed automatically and transparently through the use of BBS tokens. Each board on the network offers its own ad space available on published posts to be leased by board-approved advertisers. When advertisers fund their campaign, 90% of the BBS tokens used are deposited into the board’s cashier balance which can be used by partnered members and the board owner to cash out their share of the revenue.

Anyone can become a BBS owner by creating a new board (similar to creating a new subreddit or Facebook group), and have control of their board’s policies (within their chosen operator’s Terms of Use), and revenue distribution. Board owners are able to invite quality contributors to the board as a Partner, giving the Partnered member the ability to earn their share of the board’s revenue. Owners and their teams can Partner quality contributors in order to encourage and reward their continued contributions.

For the first several years of BBS Network, 50% of the entire BBS token supply will be distributed through the Engagement Mining program to launch and/or subsidize advertisements for approved boards - providing an initial revenue flow for boards to bootstrap the network and incentivize board growth. Earned tokens can be used to financially support the board, staked for influence in BBS DAO governance, distributed to the community as incentive, or even be used to run ad campaigns for the board.

This model of revenue distribution fundamentally changes the dynamic established by legacy social network platforms. Instead of the platform owners controlling the ecosystem and its revenue, each board owner is responsible for its own distribution and incentivization, providing the contributors and end-users a choice - ensuring the network ecosystem remains healthy and competitive instead of faltering under a centralized source.

Partnering 101

What is Partnering?

Partnering was introduced with Version 4.0.1 as a replacement to the Whitelist system. Board owners and their teams can choose to make a member a Partner in order to allow them to share in the board's revenue.

Board owners are incentivized to Partner their top contributors in order to encourage further support and contribution towards the board. Partnered members have access to view board revenue information, the ability to run ad campaigns, and earn 100% of the revenue from published posts.

How are Partners selected?

In order to qualify for Engagement Mining approval, board owners must whitelist high quality, top contributors to their boards. Boards not seeking approval into the Engagement Mining program can maintain their Partner list as they see fit, as this requirement only applies for Engagement Mining.

Engagement and discussion around contributions (posts, comments, etc) can also be considered as part of the contribution itself. Even a simple post with a link to a video, article, etc could be considered a top contribution if it sparks meaningful engagement and discussion relevant to the board's topic & goals.

There are many ways to contribute to a board, and contributors of many kinds are considered. Some ways to contribute to a board include:

  • Publishing quality, on-topic posts
  • Creating meaningful comments that spark discussion
  • Sharing engaging content that sparks meaningful discussion (relevant links/articles/videos about the board’s topic)
  • Creating useful tools, exceptional designs, or other notable contributions

Please remember that only top contributors for the board will be invited to become a Partner, and being invited to become a Partner is not guaranteed. Partners who fail to meet these requirements, or those who abuse their status, will be removed from the program.
