THE MOST DANGEROUS TOY IN THE WORLD.

In 1950, the "Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab" laboratory kit, a product of Alfred Carlton Gilbert, was put up for sale. Inside it contained:

• 1 electroscope

• 1 Geiger counter (instrument for measuring radioactivity)

• 1 spintariscope (instrument to observe nuclear disintegrations)

• 1 cloud chamber (instrument to detect particles with ionizing radiation)

.

As if that were not enough, it also contained:

• 4 RADIOACTIVE MINERALS, which were: Pb-210, Ru-106, Zn-65 and Po-210☢️.

Despite the low level of radiation from the items that came in it, it is considered one of the most dangerous toys that ever existed.

It wasn't the danger that kept it off the market, but its high price, which was $49.50. For this reason, it was only sold between 1950 and 1951.

The final curious fact is that even Columbia University bought 4 kits to carry out studies with them.

Would you have bought it?

Bonus fact: with the instructions came a note that said the government would give $10,000 if they discovered new sources of radioactive materials with the kit
