Oman took a 1-0 lead in the AFC Asian Cup match against Saudi Arabia. Saudi's fans who were in Qatar hoped that their team could turn the match around like how they did in their first match in the 2022 World Cup at the same venue.
At that time, Saudi who were the underdogs restricted the eventual winner of that year's World Cup to a 1-0 lead at half time. Saudi stunned Argentina with 2 second half goals to pull off the biggest World Cup upset and win the match 2-1
Unlike in 2022 against Argentina, Saudi was expected to win against Oman in the Asian Cup match. They conceded an early goal in a match that had to use VAR for several uncertain decisions.
The penalty awarded against Saudi was technically correct as VAR showed that the Oman's player foot was indeed stepped on. But the Saudi player who did it did it did not do so intentionally. He wasn't even going for a tackle but accidentally did so as he was running. The technically correct but harsh decision resulted in Oman getting a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.

Saudi had many chances in both halves but could not score. With time dwindling, Saudi made 2 substitutions in the 75th minute.
3 minutes after coming on, A Ghareeb equalized for Saudi who continued putting pressure on Oman.
Saudi fans were overjoyed when Al Buhaili headed in a corner during stoppage time but the referee held that he was offside. It was the turn for Oman to be joyful even after VAR as the referee's gestures were misinterpreted.
So the Oman players continued the game and kicked the ball forward. The referee stopped the game and said that he had reversed the offside decision.
The joy of Oman turned into dismay and some of their players dropped on the ground.
The celebration for Saudi that had been cut off restarted. Some of their players ran to Al Buhaili to congratulate him. Instead of allowing himself to be jumped on or hugged, he ran to the corner. He took out a small object which turned out to be a green balloon, blew it up and then let it fly off.
Moments later the referee blew his whistle again. Not to reprimand Al Buhaili for wasting time but to indicate the end of the match.
