Instead of "Always Bayern Munich" Bundesliga is now "Never Say Neverkusen" 🤣

Bayern Munich's victory of 2-0 against Koln could not stop the era of Bayern always winning the Bundesliga. For 11 consecutive years Bayern has won the Bundesliga. This is record that will not be broken for a very very long time even if it can ever be broken. 🦋 Leverkusen this week not only stopped Bayern from setting a higher record of 12 consecutive years but also broke Bayern's record of the highest number of consecutive matches undefeated. 🦋 Leverkusen fantastic performance this season will probably see them setting more records this season. It remains to be seen what new records they can set such as least number of goals conceded, highest number of goals scored, highest number of clean slates (not conceding any goals in a match). They still have 5 matches to be play in the Bundesliga this season and the records they can set will depend on the outcome of those matches. 🦋 A record that their fans are delighted that they have broken is the bad record of Never Ever Having Won The Bundesliga or NEVERKUSEN 🤣 Leverkusen thumping 5-0 win over Weder is setting up Leverkusen for more records to come. It added another clean slate, kept the goals conceded to just 19 and increased the number of goals scored to 74, goal difference of a whopping 55 and 16 more points than the 2nd placed team. 🦋 If Leverkusen keeps up their wonderful performance over the remaining 5 Bundesliga matches, I wonder what these figures will be 🦋 By the way, Bayern and Stuttgart are currently in 2nd and third place with 63 points. Next to Leverkusen Bayern has the highest goal difference of 46 while Leipzig has 34 while Stuttgart has 33. Leverkusen dominance of the Bundesliga this season is so obvious 🦋

Arsenal Vs Aston Villa

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are in a tense fight for 4th placing in the EPL that will get a place in next season's Champions League. Tottenham surprisingly got crushed by Newcastle 0-4. If Tottenham had won against Newcastle they would have had 63 points compared to Villa's 60. Moreover the 4 goal loss damaged their goal difference and Villa now has a 1 goal better goal difference. The loss by Tottenham has made the match between Villa and Arsenal which will kick off in a few hours time a crucial match for both teams. A win for Villa will give them a 3 point lead over Tottenham. Arsenal also need full points from the match in order to regain the top spot in the EPL. Manchester City who won 5-1 against Luton now has a 2 point lead. A loss for Arsenal will be a severe blow that may well destroy their chances of winning the EPL. Liverpool is expected to win against Crystal Palace and so the loss of points by Arsenal will cause them to drop to 3rd place 🦋 https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/fixtures-results/arsenal-mikel-arteta-handed-aston-28978098?int_source=amp_continue_reading&int_medium=amp&int_campaign=continue_reading_button#amp-readmore-target Winning in midfield may give Arsenal the win they require. All of their midfield players including   Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, Jorginho, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Kai Havertz and Fabio Vieira to make up their midfield trio are available. Arteta has so many of them to choose from. Villa on the other hand will have Douglas Luiz, B Kamara and Jacob Ramsey unavailable. Luiz has been the mainstay for Villa and only missed 1 match for Villa this season. He missed that match as he was serving a 1 match suspension after collecting 5 bookings. In Villa's match against Brentford, Luiz collected his 10th booking and so now has to serve a 2 match suspension 😮 Luiz is a good player but what a terrible disciplinary record. Kamara and Ramsey are both unavailable because of injury. Dominating the midfield is likely to cause the game to go in favor of Arsenal. 🦋 The results of the Arsenal Vs Villa and Liverpool Vs Palace matches today will see whether Arsenal regain top spot or drop to 3td in the exciting fight to see who is going to win the EPL 🦋

Matches to look out for as the EPL restart

The 3 teams fighting to win the EPL are Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. Arsenal and Liverpool both have 64 points while M City has 63.Arsenal is considered the leader as they have a bigger goal difference than Liverpool. Of the 3 sides, Liverpool has the "easiest" next match and will play against Brighton. Liverpool should not take Brighton lightly but is expected to win. Should Liverpool get full points for that match, they have the chance to become the new leader of the EPL depending on the outcome of the Arsenal Vs M City match. A draw will see Arsenal dropping to 2nd place while a M City win will allow City to overtake Arsenal. This will mean that Arsenal drop 2 places within a week. Aston Villa and Tottenham are fighting to see who will finish 4th and so qualify for next season's Champions League. In their last matches Villa dropped points in a 1-1 draw with West Ham. Tottenham failed to capitalize on this when they were upset 0-3 by Fulham. This weekend Villa will face another tough match against Wolves. Tottenham hopes to spring back from their upset by Fulham in their next match which is against a team trying to avoid relegation, Luton The 6th place club, Manchester United will be hoping that both Villa and Tottenham drop further points so that it could narrow the gap from them. MU next match is against Brentford who collected 1 point only from their last 5 matches. MU hopes to continue their resurgence with another victory. With just 10 matches left it will be very difficult for MU to overtake both Villa and Tottenham in order to qualify for Champions League. It can qualify for the Europa League if it can overtake one of its 2 rivals and finish in 5th place. MU will have to continue its good recent form and hope that its rivals continue to drop points. MU's best chance of qualifying for the Europa is to win the FA cup. After eliminating Liverpool in the Q final, MU opponent in the S final is Coventry which is a Championship League team instead of the EPL. At the bottom end of the EPL. Nottingham Forest is 3rd from bottom because of the 4 points deduction that was slapped on them. It will not be an easy match for them against Crystal Palace. Forest will hope to get full points in order to get out of the bottom 3. Everton the team with a 6 points deduction has an even toughfer task to get full points against Bournemouth. Both Everton and Forest will not be having relegation pressure if not for their points deduction. Hopefully they can remain in the EPL come end of season. 🦋

Was Qarabag FK robbed of making a stunning upset.

The Bundesliga has good teams like Bayern Munich, Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach. Over the last 11 years, Bayern won every year. But after 25 games in the Bundesliga Leverkusen has been unbeaten. They have an astonishing defense with 6 clean slates (not conceding any goals in the match) and conceding a total of 16 goals only. In the round of 16, Qarabag did what the Bundesliga teams find so hard to do - freely score goals against Leverkusen. 4 goals in 2 matches compared to the total of 16 in 25 matches. Not only is Leverkusen unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season, it is also unbeaten in all competitions. Qarabag took 2-0 leads in both the first leg and the 2nd legs. For both matches Leverkusen managed to score stoppage time goals to make the score 2-2. 6 minutes was added at the end of regulation time. Leverkusen was trialing 1-2 at that time. In that added time Leverkusen scored to level 2-2 just like they have done so in the 1st leg. At the end of the 6 minutes of added time, the score remained at 2-2. The referee did not end the match but allowed it to go on.  In the next minute Leverkusen scored again to make the final score 3-2. If a team was in a position to score in the dying seconds it is questionable whether the referee should stop the match exactly at the last second just as the final shot is about to be made. However this was not the case in the match between Leverkusen and Qarabag. He allowed the match to go on for 4 more minutes after the added 6 minutes ended. Did he forget to look at his watch. Some upset Qarabag fans says that the referee was bought off. For those who missed the exciting match, here is a summary: Leverkusen had many chances in the first half to go ahead. In the opening few minutes B Inglesias shot over the top of the crossbar twice. In the 9th minute a shot did not go in and Hincapio got to the rebound. His shot was near the left post but on the outside instead of inside. 😨 In the 17th minute Adli's shot had power but was straight at the goal keeper. J Frimpong's shot at goal in the 34th minute lacked power and Qarabag players had enough time to stop the ball from crossing the goaline. During added time for the 1st half A Lunia headed over the crossbar. The half ended 0-0. 🦋 1 minute after the restart Frimpong tried to get a penalty. There was some contact between him and a defender. He dropped when he felt that contact. The referee was not taken in. In the 58th minute, Zoubir scored the first goal of the match. In the 61st minute, Frimpong's shirt was pulled by E Cafarguliyev. VAR showed that Carfar was the last defender who could stop Frimpong. Carfar's card was changed from Yellow to 🔴 In spite of having 1 player less, Qarabag scored through Juninho to get a 2 goal lead again. In the 72nd minute Frimpong scored to pull 1 back for Leverkusen. They were not able to score for the rest of the regulation time. With just 6 minutes of time being added, it looked like Leverkusen which had trouble scoring would lose their unbeaten record this season. P Shick scored a brace which gave Leverkusen victory. This victory is controversial because only the first of the brace was within the 6 minutes of added time. DO YOU THINK THAT QARABAG WAS ROBBED? Qarabag has played for more than half an hour since Carfar was sent off. The rest of the players have to work harder to cover. Scoring 1 goal in the added time levelled the match. If another 30 minutes of extra time had to be played, Qarabag players who already had to work harder will struggle. It is likely that Leverkusen would score in the extra time. 🦋 DO YOU AGREE?

Arsenal Defeat Porto On Penalties after failing to overcome a first leg deficit

Porto was the side that upset Manchester United in the last 16 of the 2003/2004 Champions League. Having a 1-0 advantage after the first leg ( just like they did against MU) Porto hoped to dump out another English side, Arsenal, in this year's last 16 of the Champions League. They defended well to keep Arsenal at bay for most of the match. In the 3rd minute Saka was hauled down but the referee Turpin waved play on. Arsenal managed to carry on with the attack but failed to score. Trossard crossed to White who headed it to the top of the net - but on the outside instead of from underneath 😂 In the 30th minute Pepe stopped what looked like a certain goal for Arsenal. Saka finds White down the right, he stands up a delicious cross to the far post where Havertz lurks .... and would have scored. Out of nowhere Pepe hurled himself backwards and managed to get his head to stop the ball from going into goal. 😮 https://www.eurosport.com/football/champions-league/2023-2024/arsenal-v-porto-uefa-champions-league-live_sto10058240/story.shtml It was not until the 40th minute that Arsenal levelled through a beautiful goal. Skipper Martin Odegard collected a loose ball, found Trossard who returned the ball to Odegard. He beautifully retained possession to beat another defender while Trossard got into position.   Porto had used the offside trap several times. Pepe who had earlier stopped a certain goal spoiled the trap by making Trossard onside. Trossard scored.  In the 67th minute Trossard had the ball into the net again. Knowing that he did not commit any foul and was not offside, Trossard celebrated. The referee did not allow the goal.  Pepe was under pressure from Havertz. The goalkeeper joins them and the 3  of them collide and falls down. Trossard clips the ball over the 3 of them into goal.  The referee held that Havertz had fouled Pepe. Arsenal's manager, Arteta, protested  and was booked  by the referee. A VAR check showed that Havertz did not push Pepe but he did pull Pepe's shirt. So the decision to disallow the goal is correct.  Arsenal had chances to score a second goal to avoid having to play extra time but failed to convert those chances.  Extra time was scrappy with both sides unable to score so a penalty shootout was needed.  Both sides scored the first penalty. Wendell was on target for Porto in the second but Raya's fingertips pushed the ball to the post and it did not cross the line.  2-1  in favor of Arsenal.  Arsenal scored both its 2nd and 3rd putting great pressure on Grujic who must score or else Porto will lose. It was almost a repeat of Wendell failed 2nd as Raya managed again to get his fingertips to the ball. However Grujic's shot was too strong and continued on into goal although it was slightly pushed. This kept the suspense up with the score at 3-2. Declan Rice scored Arsenal's 4th so putting pressure again on Porto. Raya became Arsenal's hero by saving Galeno's shot.  The 5th penalty was not taken by both sides as the 4-2 score cannot be overturned.  With that Arsenal are through to the Q-final  of the ECL for the first time  since 2010. A 14 year wait.   For Porto it was so near and yet so far.  They almost repeated what they did against MU, Just like against Arsenal, Porto came to England with a  1-0 home win. The lost the 2nd leg against MU also by 1 goal but with a 1-2 score instead of 0-1 against Arsenal.  Because of the away goal they scored against MU, they were deemed victors.  In the case of Arsenal, both legs ended with 1-0 wins for the home side so a  penalty shootout is required.

Barcelona qualify for Q-final with hard fought 3-1 victory over Napoli

Barcelona is a giant club but got eliminated before the Q-final stage of the ECL for the last 3 years. Having drawn 1-1 with Napoli in the first leg, Barca hoped that home ground advantage would help them to get into the Q-final for the first time in 4 years. They had a wonderful start that brought joy to the home crowd. In the first 20 minutes they had 4 big chances. Young midfielder Fermin Lopez failed to convert the first 2 but succeeded with the third. Lewandowski had a run that took out 2 defenders and then gave Lopez his 3rd chance to score which he did. Napoli attacked from the kick off after that goal but Barca managed to deal with it and counter attacked. Raphina's powerful shot rebounded off the post. J Concelo got to the rebound and pushed the ball into an empty goal. The 2 goals within 2 minutes (15th & 17th) gave Barca a comfortable lead. Playing safe by Barca almost allowed Napoli to equalize. In the 30th minute Rrahmani pulled one back for Napoli.  Then Napoli's Di Lorenzo received a cross and headed what looked like going to be a certain goal. Barca's keeper, Stergen produced a world class save that stopped Lorenzo from scoring the equalizer. Napoli was pressing Barca and in the 61st minute Xavi Hernandez made 2 substitutions for a more defensive mid field set up. Fermin Lopez who scored Barca's first goal was looking tired and was one of those taken off. In the 64th minute Napoli also made 2 substitutions to introduce fresh legs into the grueling match. The changes in mid field worked for Barca. Stopping Napoli's attempts to attack earlier and getting action back into Napoli's half. Yamal had the ball in Napoli's net but a goal was not allowed for offside. Barca was lucky that Napoli did not equalize in the 80th minute. J Lindstrom crossed the ball to M Olivera who was left alone in Barca's 6 yard box. Olivera was not pressured by defenders but yet made the mistake of heading wide. An equalizer in the final 10 minutes of regulation time would have put great pressure on Barca. Barca's  Lewandowski who set the record of 41:goals in one season took the pressure off Barca by restoring a  2 goal lead. Roberto made a fine solo run followed by a one two with Gundogan before making the assist that allowed Lewandowski to score.  Desperate to catch up Napoli made another substitution  but was not able to score against Barca.  So Barca is through to the Q-final by 4-2 aggregate.

Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is considered by UEFA to be one of the top 4 national leagues of Europe. These 4 countries are each allocated 4 clubs that get to play in the European Champions League. France, Portugal and Holland get 3 UCL spots each.  However I do not consider the Bundesliga to be interesting to follow because it is dominated by a small number of teams and in particular Bayern Munich. Bayern is the most successful club in German football history, having won a record 33 national titles, including eleven consecutively since 2013, and 20 national cups, along with numerous European honours. Dortmund was the club who most often offered a bit of competition to Bayern in the past 11 Bundesliga seasons that were won by Bayern. Bayern is also doing well this season but most likely for the first time in 12 years, they will finish as runners up instead of winning the Bundesliga. The rise of another team to challenge Bayern is good to maintain interest in the Bundesliga which has been so predictable as to its winner for 11 consecutive years. Although it is likely that another team is likely to win the Bundesliga this season, the Bundesliga still lacks interest because the team likely to win has utterly dominated this season. With just 9 matches for each team remaining in the current season, Bayern is in 2nd place but at a staggering 10 points behind the current leaders even though it is Bayern who has scored the most goals in the Bundesliga so far.  If Bayern continue their goal scoring pattern of 73 goals in 25 games, the projected number of goals they score after 34 games is 99. Bayern's defensive record is also good and they currently have the 2nd lowest number of goals conceded in the Bundesliga.  How then did Bayern find themselves trailing the leader by 10! points?  The answer is that the leader has also done well in both attack and defense. In particular their defense is so strong that they conceded only 16 goals in 25 games, very often getting clean slates.  Oh by the way, the current leader in the Bundesliga is not Bayern's traditional rival, Dortmund.  Dortmund is having a so so season and is likely to finish 4th and so grab a place in next season's UCL.  The only team likely to prevent Dortmund from doing so is RB Leipzig who currently has 46 points compared to Dortmund's 47. Neither of these 2 teams can overtake Bayern who has 57 points or the leader who has 67 points.  The other team that is extremely likely to get a UCL spot is the current 3rd place team Stuttgart who has 53 points. Should Bayern go through an unexpectedly bad spell in the remaining games, it is possible for Stuttgart to grab the runners up position.  Only if this happens can we truly say that Bayern had a bad season.  The way things are going. Bayern is having a good season but another club had a SPECTACULAR season.  Ha ha. I am being naughty 😈 and have not disclosed in this post who is having the spectacular season.  You can read some of my other recent posts to find out.  DO YOU AGREE WITH ME THAT BAYERN IS  DOING WELL THIS SEASON?  .

Bayern Munich proves critics wrong as Harry Kane sets records.

Bayern's critics have said that Bayern was having a bad season and they will not be able to win the Bundesliga this year. Something that they have won for 11 straight years. In one of my post I said that Bayern was doing better this season than in the last season. Bayern is doing well but Leverkusen who is having an unbelievably good season is doing even better. In Bayern's last match, they proved their critics wrong by thumping Mainz 8-1. Taking the results of the above match into account, Bayern has scored 73 goals and conceded 29.Both are very impressive 73 is higher than any other Bundesliga team and surpassing the 63 (next highest) scored by Leverkusen.  The 29 goals conceded by Bayern is lower than all the other teams in the Bundesliga except for Leverkusen who conceded 16 goals only.  By being No 1 and No 2:in the Bundesliga in terms of both goals scored, Bayern and Leverkusen have dominated the Bundesliga this season. The remarkable defense of Leverkusen is what made it ahead of Bayern.  Harry Kane was outstanding in the 8-1 victory scoring a hatrick and also making the pass that resulted in another goal for Bayern.  This is Kane''s third hatrick in his debut season for Bayern. What a remarkable debut season where Kane has scored 30 goals and made 10 assists in 25 games. The  3 hatricks and 30 goals are Bundesliga records for debut season players.  At the rate he is going, there is a possibility that Kane will break the all time record of the most goals in a season that is held by Ledowanski (41 goals)  Do you think that Kane can break that record?

What is Outstanding in Milan?

Milan has been recognized as one of the world's four fashion capitals. Many of the most famous luxury fashion brands in the world have their headquarters in the city, including: Armani, Prada, Versace, Moschino, Valentino and Zegna. What else is special in Milan? The rivalry between its football clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan 😃 Matches between them are hotly contested derbies. For the current season, both are doing well and  at the moment with 28 games completed  (out of the total of 38) occupy the top 2 spots in Seri A  which is one of the top 4 football Leagues in Europe.  Both of them won 1-0 for their 28th match with Inter winning against 4th placed Bologna.  AC Milan victory over Empoli allowed it to  overtake Juventus to take 2nd place in Seri A What may surprise those who have not been following  Seri A is the huge gap in points between its top 2 teams.  Inter with  75 points has a staggering 16 points more than AC. It is unthinkable for any team to overtake Inter and win Seri A.  Inter, AC Milan and Juventus are also almost certain to be in the top 4 of Seri  A and so qualify for next  season's European Champions League.  Even Bologna  which lost to Inter in their last match mentioned above is likely to grab the remaining UCL spot as it currently has a 3 point lead over the 5th placed team. , 🦋 The above lack of uncertainty robs Seri A of excitement compared to the hotly contested EPL.  The only uncertainty about the top 4 in this season's Seri A is whether Juventus can be 2nd ahead of AC Milan.  With 10 matches each to be played, it is possible for Roma or Atalanta to pip Bologna for the 4th spot.  WHO DO YoU THINK WILL FINISH 2nd and 4th?

Is Bayern Munich doing badly this season?

When reporting of Bayern sacking its manager, Thomas Tuchel, descriptions of Bayern's performance that caused his sacking includes words like dreadful and dismal. I disagree with such descriptions of Bayern and will support my opinion with figures. Last season, Bayern won the Bundesliga by scoring 71 points, 92 goals, conceding 38 goals and had a goal difference of 54. Dortmund also had 71 points but was clearly inferior in terms of goals: scoring 84, conceding 44, difference 39 22 matches of the Bundesliga has been played this season out of the total of 34 matches. From the 22 matches, Bayern has 50 points, scored 61 goals, conceded 25 , difference 36 This is an average of 2.27 points per match compared to the average of 2.09 for the last season. Assuming that Bayern's average at the end of this season is the same as the current figures, the figures at the end of the season (multiplying the current figures by 34/22) will be: 77 points, scoring 94, conceding 38, difference 56. The projected figures is better than the 71 - 92 - 38 - 54 when Bayern won the 2022/23 season. The 77 points is the same as for the 2021/22 season when the runner up, Dortmund had figures of 69 - 85 - 52 - 33. From the above, it can be seen that the level of Bayern's performance this season is more than enough to win both the last 2 seasons. What happened this season is the spectacular performance by Leverkusen. Leverkusen is the only team in the Bundesliga that is undefeated. It won 18 matches and drew 4 giving it 58 points, scoring 57 goals, conceding 15, difference 42. Using Leverkusen current averages to project over 34 matches will give it 89 points, scoring 88, conceding 23, difference 65. What is spectacular about Leverkusen this season is the strength of its defense which helps it get so many points and have a big goal difference. If you study the current Bundesliga table, you will find that Leverkusen has scored 57 goals which is more than any other team except Bayern who scored 61. Bayern's performance in both attack and defense this season is good and as shown earlier is no worse than for the last 2 seasons won by Bayern. Bayern did NOT do dreadfully or dismally this season as alleged. Tuchel was a victim of 2 factors: 1) The extremely high expectations of Bayern having won the Bundesliga for 11 consequtive seasons since 2011. 2) The spectacular performance by Leverkusen this season whiich threatens to end the 11 year streak of Bayern. Is there any other team in any of the major leagues around the world that has won the top tier national league 11 years running? My sympathy goes to Thomas Tuchel. I am glad that his sacking is not with immediate effect but he will complete the current season. Although he may not win the Bundesliga because of Leverkusen, he can guide Bayern to results which will make any other team happy. Bayern with 50 points is almost certain of a top 4 finish in the Bundesliga and qualify for next year's Champions League. The current 4th and 5th placed teams, Dortmund and RB Leipzig have 41 and 40 points. Bayern is still in contention in the current year's Champions League.

Copa Del Rey Semifinals

The Copa Del Rey is the Spanish equivalent of the English FA Cup. It is the most prestigious Spanish knockout football competition while the La Liga is the top tier Spanish League. The winners of these 2 competitions will face of the the next year's Supercopa De Espana or the Spanish Super Cup. The Supercopa held on 15 January 2024, was a El Clasico between the 2 biggest Spanish clubs, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Real Madrid won, defeating Barcelona 4-1. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have been eliminated in this year's Copa Del Rey. This teams in the semifinals of this year are Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, and Mallorca. The most closely watched Semifinal is the one between A Madrid and Athletic Club. These are the 2 clubs that eliminated Barcelona and Real Madrid. In a Madrid derby A Madrid defeated R Madrid 4-2 in a round of 16 match. Athletic Club defeated Barcelona in the quarterfinals also by a 4-2 margin. Matches between A Madrid and Athletic Club are closely fought and the first leg of the semifinal gave Athletic Club a narrow 1-0 lead. The second leg promises to be another closely fought match. If A Madrid wins by a 1 goal margin and the teams are still tied after extra time, we will get to see a penalty shoot out. The other semifinal is between Mallorca and Real Sociedad. Mallorca surprised Girona to take a 3-0 lead before Girona scored 2 but still lost 2-3. Girona had led this year's La Liga for a long spell before REal Madrid recently took over the lead at the top of La Liga.  Real Sociedad had a narrow 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo in the quarter finals.  The first leg of the semifinal was a 0-0 draw Both Mallorca and Real Sociedad are currently substantially behind A Madrid and Athletic Club (vanquishers of R Madrid and Barcelona) in the latest standings of La Liga.  WHO DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE FINALISTS?  WHO DO YOU EXPECT TO BE THE FINAL WINNER?

Is Liverpool the favorite to win the EFL Cup aka Carabao Cup?

Liverpool with 60 points in the EPL has 25 more points than Chelsea who has 35 points. Being so far behind Liverpool in the EPL, the only 2 trophies that Chelsea has a chance of winning are the EFL/Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.  Liverpool is in contention for 4 trophies this season: UEFA Europa League, EPL, FACup, EFL/Carabao Cup. Liverpool is the club that has won the EFL Cup the most number of times (9X) Based on the above, most people will consider Liverpool to be the favorite to win in the final on 25th February. I think that Chelsea is more hungry to win and so will try harder than Liverpool. What is the reward for winning the EFL Cup? On top of the prize money of £100, 000 the winner qualfies for next year's UEFA Conference League. Both these rewards are not attractive to a club like Liverpool. The prize money of £100, 000 is less than what a team gets for winning the 3rd round of the FA cup. It is not even enough to pay the salary for 1 week of 1 of their top players. The UEFA Conference League is the 3rd Tier European competition behind Champions League and Europa League. Liverpool is almost 100% sure of a top 4 finish in the EPL which will give them a ticket to the top tier Champions League. Chelsea is so far behind in the EPL table that it is unlikely to finish in the top 4. Even getting 5th to qualify for the Europa League is unlikely. Therefore winning the EFL Cup is Chelsea's best chance of qualifying for next year's European competition. The second reason why Chelsea will be hungry to win is that Chelsea has not won any trophies since 2021. 2021 was a glorious year for Chelsea. It won 3 prestigious top competitions that year: 1) UEFA Champions League by beating Manchester City. This was the 2nd time Chelsea won Champions League. 2) FIFA Club World Cup. Chelsea's first time winning this Cup. 3) UEFA Super Cup. This is a direct match between last season's Champions League winner and Cup Winners Cup (the competition between various winners of the national FA Cups) Chelsea who won the Cup Winners Cup by beating Stuttgart of Germany defeated Real Madrid who had won the Champions League by beating Juventus. Not having won any trophies since the wonderful 2021 season, Chelsea will be hungry to restart addiing to their trophies cabinet. Chelsea will hope that winning the final on 25th February will be followed by a 5th round FA Cup victory over Leeds United on 29th February. If Chelsea wins against Leeds, it will be through to the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup Best wishes to Chelsea on their matches against Liverpool and Leeds.

Who Will Win The EPL This Season?

My last post was about the exciting current season compared to the last 6 seasons. The post included a summary of the top 3 teams for each of the seasons. The winning side had far more points than the 3rd place team. Starting from the 2017/18 season to last season the gap was 23, 26, 23, 17, 19, and 14 points. The seasons were either dominated by 1 team or had only 1 team near the winner. For example, Manchester City had 19 points more than MU in 2017/18 and 12 ponts more in 2020/21 while Liverpool had 18 points more than City in 2019/20. Only die hard fans of the winners are happy and even for them watching the last few matches of the season will lack excitement as their team has already won the EPL irrespective of the results of the matches. 😴😴 This season has 3 teams (Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City) neck to neck. Up to 6 weeks ago Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa was in the fray and both these teams have lead in the EPL table. Dropping points in recent games have caused them to drop out of the top 3. Last season, Arsenal led the table for a substantial part of the season but finished as runners up 5 points behind Manchester City. Arsenal has also led in this season's table before several poor matches saw them drop off. Two big wins (6-0 against West Ham and 5-0 against Burnley) has allowed Arsenal to claw back into contention as EPL winner. A recent article suggest that like last season, Arsenal will falter and drop off again. https://www.teamtalk.com/arsenal/arsenal-told-worrying-reason-title-challenge-fizzle-out-man-city-liverpool-boasting-key-advantage#:~:text=Premier%20League%20has%20produced%20a%20three%2Dway%20title Do you agree with the above article?  Arsenal is a good side but are not as consistent as Manchester City and Liverpool. CAN ARSENAL WIN THIS YEAR'S EPL? My favorite clubs are Manchester United and Arsenal in that order. MU seems to be too far behind and is highly unlikely to win. I hope that my next favorite, Arsenal, will win. 🦋

Exciting Match day 25 of 38 in the EPL.

Recent match days of the EPL are exciting because of 2 reasons. Firstly, there are a lot of matches with at least 5 goals per match. Secondly there is fierce competition between teams. In recent years, it has sort of become expected that Manchester City would win the EPL. Out of the last 5 seasons City won 4 and finished 2nd in the season they did not win. What made the non competition worse was the gap in points especially of the 3rd placed team from the top 2. In 2017/18 M City had 19 points more than MU and 23 points more than 3rd placed Tottenham. In 2018/19, 3rd placed Chelsea had 26 points less than M City and 25 points less than Liverpool. In 2019/20 (year City did not win), Liverpool had 23 points more than 3rd place MU and 18 points more than M City. In 2020/21 City had 12 points more than MU  and 17 points more than 3rd placed Liverpool In 2021/22 3rd placed Chelsea had 19 points less than M City and 18 points less than Liverpool  In 2022/23 3rd placed MU had 14 points less than M City and 9 points less than Arsenal Source: EPL Way before the end of the seasons, it was clear how the season would end. The lack of suspense robs the competition of excitement. 😴😭🥱 In contrast to the above, Currently Liverpool has 57 points while Arsenal has 55 points. M City if it wins against Brentford day after tomorrow, will be tightly sandwiched between the 2 with 56 points. Just 1 point separating each of the 3 sides.  The competition for 4th to 6th place is wide open and will likely to be fought between Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and MU.  Now let us look at the matches for match day 25 of 38. Arsenal followed up their 6-0 win over West Ham on match day 24 with another big win of 5-0 against Burnley Liverpool retained their lead at the top of the table with an emphatic 4-1 win against Brentford M City unexpectedly failed to defeat Chelsea and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Because of the 2 points dropped, M City will not be able to overtake Liverpool at the top of the table even if they win against Brentford on Wednesday. City is expected to win the match against Brentford which was postponed from December 2023 as City was away competing in the World Club Championship at that time.  Rasmus Hojland scored a brace which earned MU a 2-1 victory over Luton.  Hojland had a slow start in his playing career at MU which caused some to say that he was a failure not worth the price MU paid for him.  Since starting to score, Hojland has dispelled any doubts about him by scoring in 6 consecutive games. In the game against Luton he scored an astonishing quick goal. Just 36 seconds after the start of the game, a defensive mistake by Luton gave the ball to Hojland who made no mistake with the gift.  Minutes later Hojland scored another goal that some described as "outlandish". It was not an accidental  deflection of a shot by A Garnacho. Hojland deliberately used his chest to push the ball into goal. Hojland deserve praise for not wasting time to try to control the ball in order to kick it. He showed his killer instinct to seize the opening and chestiing the ball home.  Luton halved the deficit in what some fans called out as a mistake by goalkeeper Onana. He went away from his goal but was beaten to the ball by Villa's  who headed in the goal.  DO YOU THINK THAT ONANA IS TO BE BLAMED?  There were no goals scored in the second half of the match between MU and Luton This in contrast to the late goals by MU which enabled MU to win its last 3 matches and rise to 6th place in the EPL table.  Villa which lost to MU 1-2  last week, defeated Fulham 2-1 this week.  The opposite happened for Tottenham. They defeated Brighton 2-1 last week  but lost 1-2 to Wolves this week.  With Villa and Tottenham taking turns to lose/win by 2-1 margins, Villa  regained 4th placing from Tottenham who overtook Villa last week.  The taking of turns to lose by Villa and Tottenham has enabled MU  which won 4 consecutive EPL matches to close the gap with Villa and Tottenham.  Thus with slightly more than a quarter of the current season to go we have intense competition at the top section of the EPL table.  There is also fierce fighting for survival at the bottom section of the table.  Burnley whose 0-5 loss to Arsenal was matched by Sheffield United who lost to Brighton 0-5. Both of these clubs have 13 points only and are stuck to the bottom of the table.  The fight to avoid relegation by being the 3rd  from the bottom involves at least 5 clubs: Everton, Luton, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Brentford.  Everton with 19 points has the least number of points of these 5 clubs. This is because of a 10 points deduction that was slapped on Everton. Their next match is against Crystal Palace who have 24 points. if Everton wins the match, the gap between the 2 sides will be just 2 points.  DO YOU THINK THAT THE 10 POINTS DEDUCTION FOR EVERTON (which may cause them to be one of the teams relegated) IS EXCESSIVELY HARSH?  Pre October 2023 Bournemouth was one of the bottom 3 clubs. A turn around since then has lifted them out of the relegation zone.  The 5 clubs mentioned above hope to join Bournemouth.  WHICH OF THEM DO YOU THINK WILL FAIL AND BE RELEGATED?

The difference between MU and the current top 3 teams in the current EPL.

After winning its last 4 consecutive EPL matches, MU has made it to be placed 6th in the EPL table. Qualifying for next year's Champions League or at least the Europa League is a real possibility instead of being unlikely. Based on the the results of the current top 6 teams they seems to be 2 tiers : Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City contesting for the EPL title. Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United contesting for 4th and 5th placing. The 4th placed team gets to play in next year's Champions League while the 5th placed team will get to play in the Europa League. Both these European competitions are lucrative financially whereas the 6th placed EPL team gets to play in the 3rd tier competition, UEFA Conference League. The Conference League is not prestigious and does not pay well financially. 🦋 Although the recent performance of MU is commendable, there is vast difference between MU and the current top 3 EPL teams. MU is lacking in both attacking and defensive abilities compared with them. MU currently has scored 35 goals and conceded 34 giving it a goal difference of just 1. The average number of goals scored by Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City is 58 while the average number of goals conceded is 24. Their average goal difference is a massive 32 compared to MU's teeny Winnie 1 😭 Although the amount of goals conceded by Villa and Tottenham are comparable with that of  MU, they scored 52 goals each giving them a vastly superior goal difference compared to MU.  With Sir Jim Ratcliffe becoming a substantial shareholder, more funds may be made available to acquire players.  There is a  player that MU can use to increase its firepower without having to buy. The player is already signed by MU but they are not using him.  This player is now on loan to Getafe. In the 21  matches he has played for Getafe, he contributed 10 - scoring 5 and making the assist for the other 5. He is one of Getafe's most  important players. The player that I refer to is Mason  Greenwood and the reason why MU is not using him is told in The success of Greenwood in Getafe is sending a message to Sir Jim to consider reinstating Greenwood into MU.  As a public figure who may be role model for his admirers, Greenwood should act responsibly.  As an immature teenager when the incident happened, Greenwood is not without fault.  Has he already paid the price by being loaned to Getafe?  Should he be given a  second chance to succeed with MU?.  As an ambitious player who has one cap for England, he would like more. The best chance  for him to catch the eye of England selectors is if he were playing for an EPL team.  MU does not want him to help a competitor in the EPL and so he was loaned to a Spanish team. MU is unlikely to agree to a transfer directly to another EPL team.  However if Greenwood is transfered to a non EPL team first, he may eventually end up with an EPL team.  MU may regret letting him go if he helps another EPL team succeed including in matches against MU.  iF IT WAS UP TO YOU, WILL YOU LET GREENWOOD REJOIN MU?

EPL League getting hot

The top 5 teams in the EPL all won their matches except for Aston Villa who lost to Manchester United 1-2. The win by MU has enabled the club which was languishing to creep into 6th place in the EPL . Thus the current top 6 places in the EPL are now occupied by the supposedly "Big Six". I will make another post why they are considered as the Big Six - it will be a story of how the Big 2 evolved into Big 4 and then further evolved into Big  6. The biggest win by the Big Six last week in Round 24 of the EPL was by Arsenal who defeated West Ham 6-0 This huge win is very important to Arsenal because compared to the 2 clubs above it in the EPL table it had a poorer goal difference. The big win helped it to narrow the gap. Goal difference may become important as only 2 points seperate the top 3 teams : Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/13066908/west-ham-0-6-arsenal-gunners-thrash-abject-hosts-as-declan-rices-stunner-caps-demolition-job West Ham is not a weak team and has won against big clubs. So it was quite surprising that it lost by such huge margin against Arsenal. Did you enjoy watching that game? 🦋 MU had a disastrous first half of the current season including being eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League. In the EPL, they had so few points that it was likely that MU will not be able to finish in this year's top 4 in order to qualify for next year's Champions League. Recently MU has scored goals late in matches to grab points from their opponents. Before their latest win against Aston Villa was the come from behind 4-3 victory over Wolves The recent victories by MU has made it possible for MU to try to climb another 2 places to 4th place and so qualify for next year's Champions League.  DO YOU THINK THAT THEY CAN DO THIS? 🦋 All the Big six who are currently occupying the top 6 places in the EPL will hope to win their next match in the round of 25.  MU's opponent is relegation battling Luton so it is possible for MU to continue their climb. 🦋

Two ex Manchester City Players who delivered for Chelsea.

21 year old Cole Palmer scored a Brace for Chelsea in the recent Carabao Cup semifinal against Middlesbrough. That took his tally for Chelsea this season to 11 goals and 7 assists in 22 appearances Source When the young player signed over from Manchester City for £42 million  some considered that he was overpriced as he hardly played for City last season.  Out of the 14 EPL matches he played, 12 were as a substitute thrown in during a game. He asked Pep Guardiola for more minutes of playing time but was refused.  It is not that Guardiola does not think that Palmer is not a good player, but was not yet ready to be given more playing time. There were players higher in Guardiola's pecking order.  The following post shows what Guardiola said about Palmer when he spoke of another young starlet of Manchester City IF YOU WERE PALMER WHAT WOULD YOU DECIDE?   iS IT BETTER TO WAIT PATIENTLY IN A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL SiDE LIKE CITY OR TO TAKE CHANCES IN CHELSEA? (Note that Chelsea post Roman Abramovich was doing badly and has not won any Trophies)  Another ex Manchester City player who had a good game in the semifinal for Chelsea is Raheem Sterling.  Sterling has a terrible record for semifinals  that would have superstitious fans worried.  His first semifinal appearance was  for Liverpool against Chelsea in 2015. He scored the only goal for Liverpool in a 1-1 draw for the first leg. Liverpool lost 1-0 in the second leg  and was eliminated.  And, amazingly, in 20 semi appearances since then for both various clubs and country, Sterling has not found the target again since. He lost an FA Cup semi with Liverpool against Aston Villa prior to his switch to City. And he played in a whopping 15 semi-finals during his time at the Etihad  for City– but drew a blank in all of them. Sterling scored only 1 goal in 22 semifinal appearances! Chelsea lost the 1st leg 1-0 and so have to score at least 2 goals.  CAN STERLING BE COUNTED ON TO PRODUCE?  Sterling did produce and Chelsea are through to Wembley.  CAN THEY WIN THEIR FIRST TROPHY SINCE POST ABRAMOVICH?  WHAT DO  YOU THINK ABOUT COLE PALMER AND RAHEEM STERLING?

Chelsea 6 Middlesbrough 1

https://youtu.be/nYteOUABFn4?si=jbWYvqi5J418JAFI Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 6-1 in the second leg of the semifinal of the Carabao Cup. Middlesbrough had won the first leg 1-0 In the 15th minute   Howson scored an own goal when he pushed the ball sent into the penalty area by Raheem Sterling into his own net.  Before that Armando Broja of Chelsea when contesting with the keeper headed the ball just over the net. It appears to me that he was fouled which affected his jump. DO YOU THINK THAT A PENALTY SHOULD HAVE BEEN AWARDED?  Fernandez scored Chelsea's second goal in the 29th minute to put Chelsea 2-1 ahead on aggregate. A Disasi scored the third goal in the 36th minute and Cole Palmer added the 4th to make the half time score 4-0 Palmer showed how deadly he is by scoring again in the 72nd minute. It was his 11th goal for the season for Chelsea. Madueke made it 6-0 in the 81st minute. Rogers gave the Middlesbrough fans something to cheer by scoring a consolation goal in the 88th minute. What a contrast in between the 2 legs of the semifinal. Middlesbrough won the first 1-0 but was trashed by Chelsea 6-1 in the second. Chelsea's opponent in next month's final will be either Liverpool or Fulham. Liverpool has a better head to head record against Fulham winning 3 out of the last 5 games while Fulham won one. Liverpool won the 1st leg in January 2-1. However the outcome of the semifinal is far from certain. Fulham had taken the lead in the 1st leg before Liverpool scored 2 to get a slim 2-1 lead. In the EPL match between the 2 in December, Liverpool also had to come from behind to win a match they seem to have lost. What a thriller that match was - Liverpool scraped through 4-3. An earlier EPL match between the 2 was an exciting 3-3 draw. Fulham seems to be a team that can score against Liverpool. Another factor to consider is that Fulham is near full strength with only 1 player unavailable. Liverpool has a long list of injured players including its top scorer Salah who is temporarily back from Afcon but is unable to play because of an injury picked up while playing for Egypt. Liverpool is also without W Endo who is currently in the AFC Asian Cup for Japan Before Salah and Endo left for Afcon and Asian Cup, J Kopp had said that he hopes that they do well but not too well., 🤣. The reason is that if Egypt and Japan advances to the finals or even semifinals, Salah and Endo will be away for a long time. WILL WE HAVE A CHELSEA vs LIVERPOOL FINAL? CAN CHELSEA WIN THEIR FIRST TROPHY SINCE THE POST ROMAN ABRAMOVICH ERA? Liverpool's next EPL match against Chelsea on 1st February may be a preview of a final than fans are hoping for.

Saudi Arabia's Crazy Opening Matches in Qatar

Oman took a 1-0 lead in the AFC Asian Cup match against Saudi Arabia. Saudi's fans who were in Qatar hoped that their team could turn the match around like how they did in their first match in the 2022 World Cup at the same venue. At that time, Saudi who were the underdogs restricted the eventual winner of that year's World Cup to a 1-0 lead at half time. Saudi stunned Argentina with 2 second half goals to pull off the biggest World Cup upset and win the match 2-1 Unlike in 2022 against Argentina, Saudi was expected to win against Oman in the Asian Cup match. They conceded an early goal in a match that had to use VAR for several uncertain decisions. The penalty awarded against Saudi was technically correct as VAR showed that the Oman's player foot was indeed stepped on. But the Saudi player who did it did it did not do so intentionally. He wasn't even going for a tackle but accidentally did so as he was running. The technically correct but harsh decision resulted in Oman getting a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/39322723/saudi-arabia-claim-another-epic-win-qatar-even-crazier-upset-argentina Saudi had many chances in both halves but could not score. With time dwindling, Saudi  made 2 substitutions in the 75th minute.  3 minutes after coming on, A Ghareeb equalized for Saudi who continued putting pressure on Oman.  Saudi fans were overjoyed when Al Buhaili headed in a corner during stoppage time but the referee held that he was offside. It was the turn for Oman to be joyful even after VAR as the referee's gestures were misinterpreted.  So the Oman players continued the game and kicked the ball forward. The referee stopped the game  and said that he had reversed the offside decision.  The joy of Oman turned into dismay and some of their players dropped on the ground. The celebration for Saudi that had been cut off restarted. Some of their players ran to Al Buhaili to congratulate him. Instead of allowing himself to be jumped on or hugged, he ran to the corner. He took out a small object which turned out to be a green balloon, blew it up and then let it fly off.  Moments later the referee blew his whistle again. Not to reprimand Al Buhaili for wasting time but to indicate the end of the match.
