Home alone

Despite its flaws, 'Home Alone' manages to combine a dysfunctional family, gruesome body horror, excessive product placement, and John Williams' iconic score to create a beloved Christmas classic that has become a yearly tradition in our household. As an adult, I can objectively acknowledge the film's numerous problems, but my strong and happy memories associated with it make it impossible for me to review it without bias. I was a child during the height of the 'Home Alone' craze and have fond memories of eagerly renting or watching it on TV every Christmas. Even now, as an adult, I make sure to watch it with my family every year; it's an integral part of our holiday season.

However, I do not believe that newcomers to the film will enjoy it as much. Despite its heartwarming Christmas moments, the film is very much a product of its time, with outdated elements such as the distinct 90s wallpaper. Furthermore, the characters are largely unlikable and scattered, except for Kevin, whose growth and cuteness shine through his initial bratty behavior. Interestingly, in 2023, the film's message about the strained relationship between the snow shovel guy and his son feels more relevant than ever, given the current social climate. Despite its flaws, I still believe 'Home Alone' is worth at least one viewing, though I would recommend watching it without children first. Fortunately, it's easy to catch during the Christmas season, especially on cable.
