INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

To begin with, this movie may not appeal to everyone, and that's alright. However, I will explain why I found it so enjoyable. The setting is expertly portrayed and completely immerses you into the authentic world of the story.

As a fan of American folk scenes, I appreciate the attention to detail that brings the setting to life. Isaac's character is based on Dave Van Ronk, and the inclusion of small Ronk details, like the captain's license and road trip, adds a sense of realism to the character.

The Gaslight Cafe and the manager he visits on his road trip were both real. The manager even mentions a folk trio he is putting together, which turns out to be Peter, Paul, & Mary. The songs performed in the film were also popular at the time. To top it off, Bob Dylan makes an appearance at the end. These details create a realistic depiction of the setting while focusing on a mostly fictional story. What makes the film even more authentic is the lack of romanticization.

The world is portrayed as dirty, corrupt, and unforgiving. None of the characters are perfect (in fact, most are quite flawed), which is a reflection of how the real world works. The struggles of being an artist are shown without any glamorous embellishments. This blatant portrayal of reality is melancholic and depressing, but it doesn't resort to over dramatization like many other films.

As another reviewer mentioned, there are no emotional monologues or unrealistic plot twists. The film stays true to its realistic approach. It reminded me of the works of Wim Wenders and Eric Rhomer, who also create raw and unapologetic films. This movie does not follow the traditional hero's journey, it lacks a fulfilling plot, and the characters are not necessarily likeable. As some of the lower ratings suggest, it may not have the elements commonly found in western media.

However, this is what sets it apart and makes it a thought-provoking and refreshing watch. It is a reminder that real life is not always neatly packaged with a happy ending.

This film may not be for everyone, but for those who appreciate a raw and unflinching portrayal of reality, it is a must-watch.
